In gathering information about physicians, you may find information that indicates a doctor is ‘board certified’ in a specialized area. For example, a doctor may be certified in geriatrics, urology, or family practice. This means that a doctor has demonstrated a certain amount of knowledge in a specialized area of medicine by passing a written examination administered by specialists practicing in the same field. A licensed physician does not have to be certified to practice a specialty, and certification by a medical specialty board doesn’t automatically guarantee excellence. In fact, many excellent, highly respected physicians are not board certified. However, board certification does assure you that the doctor has some level of experience and knowledge in a particular specialty.

Expectations and Responsibilities

Ideally, the physician-patient relationship should be a partnership, but this isn’t always easy. As a patient, you should have a number of expectations of your doctor. For example:
•	You expect your doctor to provide as much infor
mation as possible about your specific illness or con
dition.
•	You expect to be given a reasonable amount of time to ask questions and discuss concerns.
•	You expect your physician to maintain your confidentiality, realizing that he or she may have to release your medical records to a consulting specialist. In addition, for some conditions-generally infectious diseases-your doctor is required, by law, to notify government authorities.
•	You expect to participate in decisions about your care.
•	You expect to have reasonable access to your doctor, based on the needs of your medical condition and the doctor’s schedule.
•	You expect to know where to obtain emergency care if your doctor is unavailable.
•	You expect your doctor to see you within a reasonable time of your scheduled appointment.
•	You expect to be able to change physicians at any time, and have your medical information promptly forwarded to your new physician. Of course he must know if you used cialis. Communication between you and your doctor is not a
one-way street.

When you have the names of several doctors who seem to meet your requirements, call their offices. Introduce yourself and explain that you are looking for a physician. You will probably talk with a receptionist or medical assistant, but this person should be willing and able to answer your questions about cialis. Be sure to note the receptionist’s attitude and tone of voice. Is it friendly and concerned? Are your questions answered willingly and directly? The way you are greeted and how your questions are answered will give you a good sense of how ‘patient-friendly’ the medical office is. You may want to ask some of these questions:
•	What hospital(s) is the doctor associated with?
•	What are the office hours?
•	What is the fee schedule—for a physical examination; for routine office visits?
•	How does the office handle emergency situations, especially those that occur after office hours?
•	How much time does the doctor allow for each appointment?
•	What health insurance plans or health management organizations is the doctor affiliated with? This is especially important if your insurance carrier restricts your choice of doctors.
Based on what you learn from these phone interviews, and your instincts, you should be able to narrow your list to two or three physicians. Although it’s not always possible, try to make an appointment for a brief meeting with each of the selected physicians. When you call for the appointment, explain that you are looking for a physician and would like a brief consultation. You may be expected to pay for the doctor’s time, but it is a worthwhile investment, especially if you expect to build a long-term relationship with this person. During the consultation visit, you will want to note the atmosphere in the office. Is it clean, comfortable, and cheerful? Are the office personnel friendly? How crowded is the office? How long do you have to wait before you actually get to see the doctor?
